Mahopac school budget
05/09/10 at 12:07:15

Just received the 2010-2011 budget proposal. There is a very interesting comment at the end of the letter from the Mahopac Board of Directors.  "Shoudl the voters not approve the proposed budget, the Board of Education will convene to consider opitions usch as authorizing a second vote....."

I'm sure it's legal to do so, but what law permits a secnd vote if the first vote doesn't turn otu the way you want it to?? Can there be a third and fourth vote??  This deosn't sem to amke any sense... JMHO

By law a second and final vote can be taken; if that does not pass the contingent budget is put in place

On the same per-pupil basis, proposed spending increases average 3.2 percent in Nassau County, for an average tax hike of 4.1 percent. In Suffolk, spending would jump 2.6 percent and taxes 3.8 percent; Westchester districts want 1 percent more per pupil, for a levy increase of 2.3 percent.

Does anyone know what the proposed per pupil increase is going to be in Mahopac?

Hi Jeff, John and all

A grass-roots organization is being formed to get a grip on the ever-raising school taxes that will soon pauperize us all while education simultaneously deteriorates.

That organization is called C.U.R.E. (Citizens United to Reform Education).

You might have seen the ads in the Examiner News and the Putnam Press.  Top of the list is the consolidation of the six districts into one Putnam Central Board of Education.  We had such a structure not half century ago.  Can anyone rationalize the hiring of Six Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Directors, clericals, etc. etc. in one of the smallest counties in the state with a total school population of a little over 17,000?  And the outrage of tax increases in a falling economy?

Proposal: One Commissioner and Deputy with Directors - Business/Purchasing; Curriculum and Instruction, Personnel; Transportation.  A lot of push back is expected from those in the bloated, high salaried, duplicative central office administration but we need to bite the bullet.

This is district consolidation not a school consolidation.  No child will be moved from their present school; no teacher will be transferred to another school and no principal will lose his/her job.  The current number of schools will remain.

We are  in talks with interested parties at the county and state level.  If you wish to join this movement to bring sanity and common sense to the school system, the e-mail address is: info@cureputnam.org

VOTE NO!! on May 18th and put a period on the status quo.   Angry
