Opinion piece on the sale of Proposed 19-acres of town land

On February 6th, the residents of the Town of Carmel will have an opportunity to vote on a referendum regarding the proposed sale of 19 acres of town-owned commercial land.  Our Town Board never advertised that the land was for sale, and they tried to keep residents from voting on this issue.

The Board included in the wording of the referendum details of the contract that they thought would favor a Yes vote, but chose to omit the significant fact that the contract allows the purchaser to back out of the deal any time during a three year period.  Why does the Board not present the referendum in a fair and balanced manner, presenting both sides equally?  And why the “escape clause”?

The Board refused to get a current appraisal before agreeing to sell the land for less than the appraised value six years ago.  Has your property increased in value in the past six years?  Would you sell your land without knowing how much it is worth?  Why do they want to sell the land for less than it is worth?  Why is this developer getting favored treatment?

It is time to take control of town government away from political bosses, favored developers and wealthy political contributors, and to give the residents a fair deal.  Vote “NO” on February 6th to send a clear message to the Town Board that we want integrity restored to Town government.
